Different materials require different cleaning methods. Leather shoes can be cleaned with a soft brush and leather cleaner or saddle soap, while suede shoes need to be brushed with a suede brush and cleaned with a suede cleaner. Canvas shoes can be washed with mild soap and water, and athletic shoes can be cleaned with a soft brush and warm, soapy water.
Using a waterproof spray can help protect your shoes from water and stains. Apply the spray before wearing them in wet conditions or before exposure to substances that may stain them, such as wine or oil. This will help keep your shoes looking clean and new.
Regular cleaning can help prevent dirt and grime buildup, which can damage your shoes over time. Use a soft brush to remove dirt and debris from the surface of your shoes, paying special attention to the crevices and seams. For tougher stains, use a cleaner specific to your shoe's material.
Wet shoes can be damaged easily, so it's important to let them dry completely before wearing them again. Stuff them with newspaper or a dry towel to absorb moisture and help them retain their shape. Avoid using a heat source, such as a hair dryer, as this can damage the materials.
Polishing your shoes can help protect the leather and give them a polished look. Use a polish specific to your shoe's color and apply it evenly with a soft cloth. Let the polish dry, then buff the shoes with a clean cloth to achieve a shiny finish.
Proper storage can help prevent damage and prolong the lifespan of your shoes. Keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Store them in shoe bags or boxes to protect them from dust and moisture.
In conclusion, taking care of your shoes is an important part of maintaining their appearance and extending their lifespan. By following these tips, you can keep your shoes looking great and prevent damage over time. Remember, investing in a good pair of shoes is only half the battle - taking care of them properly is essential for getting the most out of your footwear.

It is hard to imagine we use to walk, run, and compete in footwear with no midsole cushioning; and until this addition to modern athletic shoe we relied completely on the properties of a thin leather sole and our own joints to absorb impacts and support the feet. Luckily, decades of research and countless iterations have eventually lead to the development of technically advance midsoles like you will find in the Fresh Foam from New Balance.
The New Balance Fresh Foam is a cushioned midsole designed using cutting edge material science, 3D motion captured pressure mapping, and force application data gathered from real athlete. This scientific and data driven approach to midsole construction has manifested in a shock absorbing layer of foam that utilizes convex and concave geometric structures in the midsole and sidewall for optimized balance between cushioning and stability. New Balance is confident that their Fresh Foam Technology offers the pinnacle experience across the widest population of users.
New Balance Foam Fresh athletic shoes are incredibly durable. You can expect to get 400 - 500 miles or 650 - 800 kilometers of wear out of each pair! Once you have passed this thresh hold you may notice some foam deflation and breakdown. We always recommend replacing your New Balance Fresh Foam footwear once you start to notice irregular foot strain, pain, or discomfort. The uppers of your footwear should last approximately as long as the Fresh Foam Midsole.
The New Balances collection of Fresh Foam running shoes has an option for every kind of athlete! From walking to golf and even baseball you can find a Fresh Foam runner that works for you.
If running is your sport of choice the Fresh Foam 880's, 860's, 1080's are a great choice. Made with performance in mind New Balance has been sure to construct each pair with a dual-layer midsoles, double knit mesh uppers, and a blown rubber outsole sporting a 8-12 mm heel drop.
New Balances line of Fresh Foam footwear are a great choice for people with high arches. They offer ample ankle support, roomy toes boxes, and removable insoles allowing for orthotics to be inserted. Further, the structure of the cushioned midsole helps distribute foot pressuring reducing strain and absorbing repetitive impacts.
New Balance footwear with Fresh Foam midsoles are also a healthy choice for people with flat feet or sunken arches. The supportive sole is firm but cushioned and the insole can be easily removed and replaced with an orthotic. Additionally the same support that helps athletes competes also ideal for regular day use.
New Balance Fresh Foam sneakers fit true to size. We have rarely experience any sizing issues with the Fresh Foam collection of sneakers and almost always recommend our customers purchase their regular size. One incredible feature of the New Balance fitting experience is the large array of width choices available. We suggest you visit a local running shop to have your width measured before purchasing. Alternatively, use our at home measurement tool to find your width! A proper width is essential to health footwear.
New Balance manufactures footwear that is in general good for people suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. The Fresh Foam line in particular offers the orthopaedic and bio-mechanically excellent heel and forefoot support that feet battling Plantar Fasciitis need. This support combined with a wide toe box reduces stress and compression on the forefoot helping alleviate pain, bunions, and hammertoe deformities.
Absolutely. If you are looking for a comfortable, supportive, and quality pair of athletic shoes you should at least consider a pair from the New Balance Fresh Foam line. Fresh Foam footwear ticks all the same boxes that as Hoka, On Running, and Nike do but with the addition of extra widths and American manufacturing!

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the pancreas is no longer producing insulin which is required for the metabolism of sugars. Blood levels must be checked and insulin must be inject regularly for these individuals. An imbalance in glucose levels in the blood effects the circulation in the extremities and can cause ulceration, gout, or gangrene.
Type 2 Diabetes occurs when there is an imbalance in the body's production of insulin and glucose levels get too high or too low. This often occurs in senior's or overweight individuals. It is primarily treated through diet, exercise, and medication.
Proper fitting footwear is pivotal to people with diabetes due to diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage where they have decreased circulation and lose feeling in their feet. Shoes that are too tight in any way can cause tissue damage and lead to amputation.
For people with diabetes, gradual loss of sensation in the feet interferes with the ability to judge whether shoes or orthotics fit and perform as they should. Friction or rubbing can go unnoticed and worsen into a break in the skin, or an ulcer. Shoes can be tied to tightly, hindering circulation. If a foot orthosis is needed, the patient may not be able to determine whether it is effective.
For this reason we always ask,
"Are you Diabetic? Do you have any sensation in your feet?"
According to the Canadian Pedorthic Association, an estimated 2.3 million Canadians currently live with diabetes and 14-24 percent of those are at risk of developing a foot ulcer that will result in the amputation of a foot or leg.
Foot problems are the leading cause of hospitalization for Canadians living with diabetes but it is sometimes not understood that the majority of these problems could have been avoided through daily foot care and proper shoe selection.
To get find the right size when there is limited sensitivity we always begin by taking out the insole of the shoe and having the patient try it on and stand so we can check the fit visually and through feeling through the shoe.
We also recommend people with diabetes only wear their new shoes for 1 hour periods after purchasing. This is so the feet can be check for discoloration from pressure points. Further, we strongly recommend diabetic socks.

We know our customers experience a wide range of foot health issues from pain to neuropathy and we strive to understand them and suggest intelligent footwear that is comfortable, healthy, and stylish.
A person's foot size is continuously changing throughout life. Feet lengthen, shorten, expand and contract with motion, age, pregnancy, and weight. It is important you have your feet measured periodically in order to insure you have proper footwear that support your needs.
It is normal for people to have two different length feet. Because of this, it is very important that you measure both feet and pick your size according to the larger foot. The best device to measure your foot is a Brannock device as it is capable of measuring length, width, and arch length. If you do not have access to a Brannock device you can use our Home Measuring Tool to find your size at home.
When you receive you your footwear and try them on you should be looking for a minimum of 5mm of space in the shoe beyond the longest toe on your largest foot. Remember to stand while check length as the foot will grow longer when under pressure.
Unfortuenlty, shoe sizes are not standardized and each models dimensions are proprietary to the manufacturer.
Width is vital to proper fitting footwear. If you have never had your foot width measured we suggest you use a Brannock device or our Home Measuring Tool to find the proper footwear width.
It is important to buy footwear that accommodates your foot properly or you may develop toe deformities such as:
When picking the right footwear it is important to consider more than just looks. Each pair of footwear is made with a combination of different technologies, finding the right combination for you is paramount.
It is important that your footwear fits snugly, the foot is held back, and movement of the foot is supported. When picking your footwear consider what it will be used for and choose the proper adjustment method.
If your footwear will be used for lounging or small activities slip-on may be appropriate. If your footwear will be used for more strenuous activity such as running, walking, or athletics we highly suggest you pick lace. Velcro is also a great option for people with limited hand mobility or who require the ease of adjustment.
Footwear with a rocker sole will usually have a thicker rounder sole than regular footwear. This insures that the wearer doesn't have a flat surface along the length of the foot. There are two main types of rocker soles: forefoot rockers, and full rockers, each with different biomechanical goals.
A forefoot rocker features a stiff shank through the midsole to prevent the shoe from bending. This require a curve at the toes so the foot can roll forwards in a normal walking gait. Shoes with a forefoot rocker protect the toes from flexing back and protect the ball of the foot from pressure. Any pain in the front end of the foot might benefit from a stiffer shoe with a forefoot rocker.
A full rocker features a curve at both the back end and front end of the footwear. This relieves pressure on designated areas of the foot and ankle.
During the normal rolling motion of walking the ankle and toes are required to flex, a full rocker assumes some of that flexion so that the joint in the toes and ankle are protect. In addition, full rockers build strength in the legs reducing fatigue after a long day standing on hard surfaces.
Footwear that comes up over the ankle such as hikers or boots will provide greater lateral ankle support. This is vital in sports such as basketball where there are rapid short lateral movements or when walking or hiking on uneven terrain. For standard uses low cut footwear should suffice unless you are prone to ankle related problems.
With over 250,000 sweat glands on the feet and a capacity to absorb minerals from the earth while walking, the human foot is both moist and sensitive. Many customers feel hot in a shoe lined with a synthetic material and prefer an all-natural leather or fabric upper that will allow air circulation around the foot to prevent the growth of fungus or bacteria.
Many active outdoor styles have a layer of Gore-Tex or a similar membrane that prevents water from coming in but allows moisture to escape through the small pores.
For products to be labeled 'waterproof' they must be at least seam sealed.
Leather footwear can be waterproofed using products that have a mix of oils and waxes. A silicon spray creates an invisible plastic shield around the footwear to make it more water resistant and easier to clean.
Footwear at Sole to Soul is specially selected so that most styles have a removable insole.
This allows customers to choose from having an orthotic custom made for them by a professional orthotist, purchasing a generic insole with arch support or just opting for a cushioned replacement for worn out insoles that came with the shoes.
A therapeutic shoe has roomier interior space to accommodate orthotics or any malformations of the foot. Therapeutic shoes also must meet certain criteria involving fabrics, closure, size, and width availability. Finally since foot therapy often require external or internal shoe medications, structural strength is a factor.
Sole to Soul offers the service of stretching footwear across the ball of the foot, at the instep, or on a particular spot.
The fit of a shoe can also be adjusted with a heel grip, tongue pad or cork half insole.
Structural modifications are sent to the company technician. Customers often present a prescription from a podiatrist for the modification. These modifications include:
On a cold winter morning nothing is better than slipping your feet into a pair of warm comfy slippers. But lately you may have noticed a new footwear trend, wool. Wool slippers and shoes have become one the biggest must haves in the last couple years thanks to their astonishingly soft and cozy feel. This innovative footwear material has dozens of incredible properties that make it perfect for your daily slipper yet many people are still unsure whether it is the right fit for them. For that reason we have created the following guide to wool slippers in an attempt to answer some of our patrons most frequent questions.
Table of Contents: |
Wool has traditionally been used in high end clothing due to its ability to hold its shape and last a long time. This ability to hold up and resist worn patches has made it a tailors favorite over traditional fabrics like cotton. Further the process of boiling wool to create felt creates a robust, lightweight fabric which is great at insulating heat. Perfect for Slippers.
The two most popular brands for wool slippers are New Zealand's Glerups and Germanies Haflingers. A deep dive into some online forums and talking with previous owners about their experience with wool slippers confirms that many people have owned theirs for years, and that most people getting somewhere between 3-5 years out of each pair.
In our experience Haflinger, Glerups, and Wool Slippers in general are most likely to break in the front left of the toe box where the hallux ("big toe") contacts the felt. Luckily if a hole does form in the felt of your slippers it can often be repaired by flipping the slipper inside out and sewing it closed. Regardless this is rare and may be indicative of a improper fit.
Part of what makes wool so incredible for slippers is its natural ability to clean itself and resist odors. This is thanks to wools absorption qualities which allows it to absorb twice the water vapor as cotton and over 20 times as much as polyester. This absorption stops your skin from building up sweat reducing the bacteria growth that causes odors.
A pair of high quality wool slippers from a reputable brand such as Glerups or Haflinger will cost you about $99.00 to $160.00 CAD. This can be a substantial increase from slippers most of us are use to. So it begs the question are they worth it? Simply put, yes.
Wool Slippers especially higher quality pairs offer large advantages over your standard pair of slippers. The first being, of course, the wool. The layered felted wool that brands such as Haflinger and Glerups use is more durable, molds to your foot better, and is more comfortable than a standard fabric slipper.
Glerups which cost in the area of $100.00 to $130.00 CAD are handcrafted with features such as Calfskin lowers that are stitched and glued to insure durability, rubber soles for indoor and outdoor wear, and quality wool from New Zealand farmers.
Haflingers are equally impressive in their material and build quality. With high arch support designed to maximize foot health, contoured cork footbeds that continues to adapt to your feet as you wear it, and 100% pure wool felt uppers.
A main concern we hear from our patrons interested in purchasing wool slippers is "will it itch?". The answer is generally no. The treatment and processing of both Glerups and Haflingers wool makes them incredible soft. These slippers do not feel like a old itchy wool sweater!
The basic process for manufacturing wool slippers is as follows:
Once the wool has been sheared it is washed in soft water. The washed wool is then carded and felted. The felt is then formed into a sock and steam-felted for the perfect fit. The steam-felted sock will then be glued and sewed to the sole.
Glerups have produced an incredible video on the production of their wool slippers. We recommend you give it a watch to better understand the craftsmanship that goes into each pair.
Wool slippers are made all over the world. But we will discuss the two largest and brands Glerups and Haflinger.
Glerups are designed in Denmark and manufactured at at the company owned factory in Romania.
Haflingers are designed in Germany and manufactured at factories across Europe with most being constructed in Ukraine, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Poland.
Wool slippers use felted wool to construct the upper part of the shoe. Wool is used because it wicks moisture and sweat away from your feet. This property keeps your feet dry, reduces bacteria buildup, and resists odors. In addition, wool uppers provide stability, durability, and a sturdy but breathable material. The wool used in the construction of slippers is usually washed to interlock the fibers into a thick layer 5mm which is formed to fit the foot.
Glerups are made with only two main materials wool and calfskin leather. The calfskin leather is is sourced from European tanneries to ensure that it meets all environmental requirements in the EU. Glerups also uses the most environmentally friendly methods for tanning their skin so you can be comfortable knowing they are free of PCP, AZO dyes and Chromium-VI.
Haflinger constructs its footbed and sole out of rubber and a cork-latex mixture. The cork-latex mixture is anatomically shaped to promote proper foot health while simultaneously cushioning your steps. An incredible property of this blend of cork and latex is its ability to mold and adapt to your foot overtime. The cork layer is protected with a rubber slip-resistant sole which provides further shock absorption as well as versatility. Haflinger can be worn inside or outside thanks to this design.
We often get asked by our patrons "are wool slippers going to be too hot?" or "will wool slippers really keep my feet warm?". Well, we can confidently say your feet will be neither too hot nor too cold in a pair of wool slippers. This is thanks to wools natural wicking and insolating properties. Wool retains a very moderate temperature while also wicking moisture away. This leaves your feet warm but not sweaty. Many wool slipper owners we talk to find the mix of socks and wool slippers to be the perfect balance of warmth, many also prefer slippers and nothing else. Regardless of your preference slippers such as Glerups and Haflinger will be a treat for your feet!
Glerups has great instructions on how to properly wash and maintain your wool slippers. We have included it below:

New Balance can most easily be described as a sneaker company, but their main goal is to provide footwear that helps both professional and everyday athletes alike in their daily pursuits.
Each pair of New Balance shoes blends cutting edge performance technology, functional designs, and incredible style. This is made possible by their dedicated and passionate staff who infuse their incredible skills and creativity into each model.
New Balance is a staple of our business and a best seller in all our Calgary locations. They believe in the mutual success and opportunity of their retailers, customers and staff.
Since the release of the original 990 in 1982 New Balance has been synonymous with the dad shoe. This focus on comfort over style has made New Balance and its wearers the target of internet meme culture.
But in 2016 with the 990v4 release New Balance started to see success in a new unlikely markets, street wear and high fashion. These subcultures were fascinated with the chunky style of the 990 and sold on the comfort they offered. Further, 990s provided all the style of exclusive designer brands like Balenciaga, Raf Simons and Yeezy with better construction, lower cost and improved comfort technology.
The 990s ability to defy trends, remain relevant, and cultivate such a strong following is a testament to the quality of shoe. 990s can handle harsh Calgary winters and humid Toronto summers alike. With the release of the 990v5 New Balance has once again impressed their original fans, Dads, while also creating a unique fashion statement.
New Balance is one of the few major shoe manufactures who assembles shoes in the USA. Each year their American manufacturing creates over 4 million pairs of athletic footwear. New Balance shoes labeled "Made in the USA" have a domestic value of at least 70% and are created with the highest possible amount of domestically supplied materials. This is in thanks to the over 7,000 American workers employed at New Balance, their suppliers and the five facilities in Maine and Massachusetts.
Due to high demand finding New Balance 990s can be difficult. Sole to Soul footwear sells 990s at all our Calgary locations as well as online. Pick your pair of New Balance 990s online and pick them up in store.

Heel drop or heel-to-toe drop is calculated by taking difference between the heel height and forefoot height. The heel drop of New Balance footwear will traditionally fall between 0mm to 12mm depending on the model.
This article will help you better understand heel drop and discover your own personal preference.
You can think of heel drop as the difference in cushioning between the heel and the toe. A traditional running shoe will usually sport a heel drop of approximately 10mm. By design this will cause your heel to strike the ground first while promoting a smooth motion through the rest of the foot. If you are more comfortable with mid-foot strikes a lower drop would be recommended. When selecting footwear with lower heel drops it is important to remember that a lower drop will cause more strain on the Achilles tendon ; we will discuss this later on.
See the below diagram for a visual representation of heel-to-toe drop:
Running shoes are often categorized by the level of heel drop they have. The three most common categories you will encounter are barefoot (0mm drop), minimalist (0mm - 4mm), and moderate (4mm - 12mm).
Barefoot running shoes attempt to mimic the natural position and feel of shoeless running. This running philosophy has gained substantial popularity in the last decade, in part, thanks to Christopher McDougall's novel Born to Run. The argument for barefoot running is quite extensive but mainly agues that proper form is more easily obtained the closer our feet are to shoeless.
The demand for low drop (below 4mm) running shoes has also exploded due to the barefoot running movement. Minimalist running shoes while still allowing for natural movement also provide additional support and cushioning. Minimalist running shoes can be a great intermediary step for runners looking tor reduce their drop gradually.
Moderate running shoes are, by far, the most common running shoes manufactured and used. Due to the bigger drop a heel to toe running method is promoted.
If your shoes are going to be used predominantly for running you should always be careful when changing drop heights. Differing heights place differing levels of stress on the Achilles tendon. Changing heights to quickly can lead to injury and discomfort.
We suggest runners check what their current running shoes drop height is and match that. For example, if your current shoes have a heel drop of 8mm, your safe range for new shoes is between 4mm and 12mm. Remember never run through pain.
A higher drop height inherently means your heel will have more padding. This promotes a heel-to-toe running method. While debated, this technique is still very popular and valid. If your prefer to run heel-to-toe then a higher drop height might provide additional comfort and stability through the movement.
If you prefer a more midfoot strike running technique than a lower heel drop is advised. In lower heel drop shoes your forefoot, Achilles and calf muscles are used to absorb impact as apposed to the padded heel.
Often runners decided to change their heel drop height in combination with a change in running style/technique. If you are considering changing from heel strike to midfoot strike then a reduction in heel-to-toe drop height will will be beneficial and vice-versa.
Once again your should remain cognizant of the stress low drop shoes place on your Achilles if you are not adjusted and adapted to them. Slowly reducing drop heights, beginning with short runs, and alternating between your new and old shoes is recommended.
The reiterate never run through pain. Listen to your body.
Just as important as selecting drop height is purchasing shoes that fit. A professional foot fitting helps ensure that proper space, support, and stability are present. A foot fitting will measure both the length of the foot and the width in order to minimize pinch points while matching the ergonomic shape of your foot.
If you are located in Calgary, or southern Alberta we recommend you visit one of our 6 Sole to Soul locations and get a free foot fitting. If you do not, inquire with your local running stores.

The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed is made of high-quality natural materials from renewable sources that are joined together in an elaborate production process: natural cork, natural latex, jute and high-quality suede, which is used as the top layer. - Birkenstock
Birkenstock's describes its famous footbed as the "Heart of all our models". This anatomically shaped inner sole provides unmatched comfort, support, and stability. Each curve, ridge, and angle on the Birkenstock footbed is placed with purpose and intent.
The Materials
Birkenstock has remained a footwear staple for generation in part thanks to their incredible build quality. Sourcing only the highest quality natural materials ensures that Birkenstock remains environmentally sustainable and true to traditional shoe manufacturing.
ArchesThe Birkenstock footbed consists of four layers. Two layers of Jute provide the shoe with breathability, flexibility, and structure, a layer of suede is added for moisture absorption, and a final layer of cork and latex for support, shock absorption and comfort. These four layer are then formed into the famous Birkenstock footbed shape. The unique combination of layers allows the Birkenstock footbed to adapt to the wearers feet overtime increasing comfort with wear. Each pair of Birkenstock sandals is truly one of a kind and individualized to its wearer. |
Open ToesThe majority of Birkenstock feature open toe designs. Having an open toe box allows proper room for your toes to move, adequate space for the Birkenstock arches, and promote ideal weight transfer. |
Natural PositionThe bottom of each Birkenstock features flat soles. This creates proper weight transfer by dissipating pressure throughout the entire sole of the foot. |
Buckle and StrapEach Birkenstock is secured with a high quality strap and buckle. The ability to adjust and tighten insures that your Birkenstock fit snuggly and firmly. Additionally, each buckle is given a anti-corrosion treatment so you can rest easy that it will last for years of use. |
Integral to each Birkenstock is the natural raw cork. This sustainable material provides unmatched elasticity, shock absorption, and heat insulation. Cork is a naturally reproducing product and each tree can be harvested multiple times without harming or killing the tree.
The cork is harvested by peeling five centimeters of thick bark from a Cork Oak Tree. This process can repeated every seven to nine years, with each tree producing approximately 100 to 200 kilograms of cork during its life.
Once harvested the cork is cooked thoroughly to ensure it is hygienic and clean.

Unconventionally Birkenstock uses a natural latex as its primary binding agent. Like cork natural latex is a renewable resource sourced from the resin of rubber trees.
The harvesting process involves the extraction and collection of latex milk from matured (six year old) rubber trees. Each year ,for up to 25 years, 80 grams of latex can be harvested.
Utilizing natural latex avoids the need for crude oil based synthetic latex. Further, natural latex is free from pollutants such as solvents or CFC, provides better energy balance, and has a higher elasticity-point.
In addition to cork, latex, and jute Birkenstock also utilizes genuine leather. As leather is one of the most robust and naturally durable materials it perfectly complements the build quality of Birkenstocks footbeds.
